Super Bowl XLII will be the 42nd annual edition of the Super Bowl in American football,
and the 38th annual championship game of the modern-era, post-1970 merger
National Football League (NFL). The game is scheduled to be played following
the 2007 regular season on February 3, 2008 at University of Phoenix Stadium in
Glendale, Arizona. This will be the second time that the Phoenix, Arizona, metropolitan
area will host a Super Bowl game; Super Bowl XXX in January 1996 was
played in Tempe's Sun Devil Stadium. |

This will be the second Super Bowl played in a retractable-roof stadium (designed
by Peter Eisenman and HOK Sport). During the regular season, the home team decides
90 minutes before kickoff if the roof would be open or closed, and an open
roof must remain open unless weather conditions get worse. However, as a neutral
site, the NFL controls the option to open or close without any restrictions.
The first time this was employed in Super Bowl XXXVIII at Reliant Stadium; the
roof was open for pregame and halftime shows and closed during the game. This will be the first time a Super Bowl is played on a retractable natural-grass field surface, as the University of Phoenix Stadium removable surface is unique for American sports venues. |

Arizona is proud to welcome Super Bowl visitors to a state-of-the-art football experience
like no other. The innovative concept of University of Phoenix Stadium
features the most modern technology, fan friendly amenities and a secure environment. As the first stadium in North America to feature a retractable roof and a roll-out grass field, the University of Phoenix stadium is the home of the Arizona Cardinals, as well as the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Every four years, the facility will host the NCAA's BCS National Championship football game. And of course, Super Bowl XLII will be played in University of Phoenix Stadium on Feb. 3, 2008. The stadium seats 63,400 for Cardinals games, but will provide approximately 10,000 more seats for Super Bowl XLII. |
The grass field rolls out of the stadium on an 18.9-million-pound tray, residing
outside of the stadium except for football and soccer events. With the field in
the outboard position, the 158,000-square-foot floor is unencumbered by the turf
and features a built-in utility grid. The grass field remains outside the stadium in the sun until game day, which allows for the maximum amount of sunshine and nourishment, eliminating humidity problems inside the stadium and providing unrestricted access to the stadium floor for events and staging. |
The roof has two large retractable panels that uncover the entire playing field while
providing maximum shading for fans. The roof can be closed and the facility
air conditioned in the hot months, while the roof can be opened to take advantage
of the Valley's world-famous climate in cooler months. |
